So what exactly is “waking up”?

Well for us, the punchline is tiny living in a skoolie conversion. But the story goes like this.

Once upon a time, we were just two run of the mill personal trainers, recommending protein shakes and running the gym we started in Billings, Montana. During the political season of 2016, we {like many others} took a good look around for the first time and realized we didn’t really understand what was taking place in the world. We made our first trip out of the country during that time, and were startled to realize that not everything was as we’d been told on popular media.

We started questioning our life choices, the path we were on, and the meaning of the world and our place in it. It was in this sacred space of time that we truly opened our eyes for the first time and saw the world around us clearly – or in other words, we woke up.

Over the course of that year we became vegan, started selling off our belongings, put our home and business up for sale, bought a school bus, expanded our education through classes and seminars and started homeschooling our two kids.

Today, we’ve lived tiny in a skoolie conversion for over a year, traveling as much as we can. All our belongings fit into this little bus, and it’s a special kind of freedom to know that everything we own in the world is in that tiny space with us. We run this blog and corresponding social media sites and write full-time to make money while we travel- but that’s another post altogether.

Besides the Since We Woke Up Instagram page, you can also see more at Mike’s Instagram, @mikemcvayartist, which features the art he creates as we travel. Prints and original works are available in our shop, for those who want to support his art.
