Today’s Feature Friday – Fern the Bus!

Fern is a short bus with a breezy personality, light and natural tones, and a lot of travel already under her wheels. Her owners Mande and Ben Tucker, are actually in the process of building Fern2. The original Fern is currently for sale on their Instagram, @fernthebus. We can’t think of a better skoolie to highlight right now – one that you could make into your own home!

In fact, Fern is so special she’s actually been immortalized in a book – Tiny House by Brent Heavener of the @tinyhouse Instagram.

A ROOF DECK ALL READY FOR A HAMMOCK

Most of the skoolies you see built today utilize a roof deck – there’s just nothing quite like being parked in the middle of nowhere, laying under the stars on your own private deck. But few are this well thought out. Fern has attachments built onto her deck that fold up and allow a hammock to be strung between them. Not only does this roof have a view – it has seating!

THE BRIGHTEST, AIRIEST BUS WE’VE EVER SEEN

Even leaving almost every window exposed with our own layout, we couldn’t achieve this level of bright, airy sunshine. The light-colored wood and neutral tones accentuate this breezy feel – leaving one of the brightest, sunshine-laden interiors we’ve ever seen in a bus. I don’t think it would be possible to feel down in such a cheery-looking space. However, what we truly love is that even with a neutral, whitewashed look, this bus still has personality and feels homey, not sterile.

THAT COOL-TONED EXTERIOR COLOR

Keeping with the pale tones, Fern’s exterior is painted in a happy mint color that perfectly matches her interior. We’ve seen quite a few teal/blue/green buses now, but this cool mint shade is our favorite. We personally chose to keep our bus white – feeling that a forty-foot bus with a deck and chimney already stuck out enough. But this shade pops without standing out, you know?

THE PERFECT LITTLE KITCHEN

Okay, could this kitchen be any cuter? We think it’s the perfectly proportioned little kitchen in a bus this size – all the necessities but not overdone. And that stove! Their little white range tucked beside white cupboards and butcher block countertops is probably our favorite part of this build.

A BEDROOM WITH A VIEW

The @fernthebus Instagram account features multiple shots taken of this view, with the scenery always changing beyond that door. We can’t think of a better way to wake up than to views like these just outside the bedroom door.

CUSTOM BENCH COUCHES WITH STORAGE

We love their dual couches on each side of the bus, one U-shaped and the other straight. The neat little cushions on their shiplap-look bases are clean, practical, and perfect for the space. We also imagine they provide much-needed storage in this shorty conversion – especially with a baby on board!
